Author Spotlight: Daniel Velasco
We recently came across Daniel’s newest book, Fashion ABC, and needless to say, the talent that pours out of Daniel is remarkable. Daniel created this book as a thesis to his Master’s of Fine Arts in Illustration that he earned at The Savannah College of Art and Design. He wanted to develop a visual aid to inspire future fashion designers. He found the combination of typography and illustration successfully captured the essence of classic and modern fashion designers. He attempted to include the most iconic looks from the designers listed or in cases where iconic looks were not appropriate a color palette and representative silhouettes were drawn instead. We were lucky enough to get Daniel to tell us more about his project and what makes him tick. Read on to learn more…
How long did it take you to create the drawings in your book?
Not only did I do the drawing, but I also did the typography, and designed the book itself.. The entire book took more than 6 months to be completed. Selecting the designers was the first task. Once their names were selected I made a bunch of preliminaries for the illustrations and the typography. Once they were completed, some of them had to be changed to give the book a better flow and aesthetic.
Each illustration took me two to five days to complete, and then a few days were invested for each letter and name. Once I had all the images, I started laying out the book, and took care of the image and typography for the dust jacket.
How did you come across Blurb?
One of my professors suggested it. A bunch of professors at SCAD recommend Blurb to print books.
