Deep tissue massage is often mistaken with Swedish massage or a shiatsu type of massage because of the similarity in the titles. Deep tissue massage uses powerful, long strokes that reach deeper into the muscles than other types of massage do. Lots of folks believe that it is best done with no lubricant because doing so can lead to soreness. However, this is simply not correct!

Deep tissue massage and Swedish massages are just two completely different kinds of massage therapy. They both use some of the same gentle strokes, but they differ greatly in regards to how much pressure is used and how long the strokes are used. It's not uncommon to occasionally have a little soreness from a deep tissue massage, usually for a couple of days after the session. The soreness generally goes away as the body adjusts to the new levels of profound tension and stress reduction.
