About the Book
The book "Exploring /_/ Transitions" delivers the conceptional framework of the semester project "Exploring /_/ Transitions" that was developed by Stefan Schwabe and Jannis Huelsen for the winter semester 2016/2017 in the department of Industrial Design/ System Design at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle. Exploration is an act of searching and experiencing, driven by the motivation to discover the Unknown. Whereas the Unknown in the great decades of exploration from the 15th to the 18th century was unknown territory, what are the Unknowns of today and how can we explore them? Today’s challenges like climate change, geopolitics or fiscal policy are complex and disruptive and need to be understood in a global context. Over more, these processes are not static but have to be conceptualised as dynamic transitions. Exploration facilitates a way to approach the Unknowns of these processes by revealing their underlying principles. A group of 15 students was using journey as a form of design practice for attentive seeing, experiential learning, contextualising research and relocating mindsets.

Matter & Meta
Berlin
In search of an image and material based language for the space in which words stumble and fall. A way of playing - allowing to be unknowing. Giving way to be surprised. Ingredients such as: the material and the immaterial, the abstract and the concrete, the living, the inanimate; with words, with matter; with the process. Learning by playing and to play, by rules the game imposes onto itself. Artifacts of various processes, re-excavated and re-purposed as new beginnings.
