About the Book
The Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC) produced a total of 75 original carousels and 19 refurbished or "re-manufactured" carousels in the first four decades of the 20th century. The carousels were numbered according to their order of manufacture. The carousels were numbered from #1 to #93R. Some of the carousels carried more than one number due to the fact that they received a different number after "re-manufacture". Today only thirty six of the original carousels remain, and only thirty three of these are operational. One of the operating carousels is in Australia and photos of that carouosel are not included.
This two volume set provides a photographic catalog of the existing Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC) Carousels in North America. Volume I covers carousels PTC #6 through PTC #47. Volume II covers carousels #49-#87. Photographs of the antique carved horses, lavishly decorated chariots, and classic paintings adorning the carousels are shown for each of the operational carousels. The two books of this set provide a photographic historical record of the operational PTC carousels in North America.
These books are not intended to completely document the operating history of every PTC carousel. The focus is on operating carousels. However, an appendix included in Volume II briefly lists some of the history of all PTC carousels. Thirty of the roughly 1200 photographs shown in the two volume set also are shown in the June 2010 issue of the Carousel News and Trader magazine in an article written by R. Gardner and B. Williams on the history of PTC carousels.
This book is an abridged version of Volume I.
