Bamberg is one of Europe's most beautiful and historic small cities, its stunning architectural legacy the result of centuries as an episcopal principality. Like Rome, it has seven hills, with a cathedral containing the only papal tomb north of the Alps and a masterpiece by Riemenschneider in the tomb of the imperial couple Henry II and Cunigunde.
