About the Book
Photographs of Warren Wilson College graduation day, May 19, 2007. These photographs do not document the events of the day. Instead, they are an almost random response to some families of parents, some of the participants, staff and student, in the graduation march, and of some people in the audience at the graduation ceremony. Who is included is determined more by the quality of light and background in the photographs than by how striking in some way they appeared to me. Often it was the vagaries of how the camera responded, overexposing some people and underexposing others that mattered most. But however selected, these photographs give some sense of what the day was like. I took about 1200 photographs and included about 100 so most photographs couldn't be included.

I grew up in India where my parents were Presbyterian agricultural missionaries and have taught at Warren Wilson College most of my life. My photographs are of north India and Sri Lanka where I have traveled many times; of Germany, which is my wife, Kathe's, home; and of the Swannanoa Valley and Asheville, North Carolina and of students and staff at Warren Wilson College, in Swannanoa just outside Asheville. Lately I have also been photographing weddings at Hidden River Events.
