V-Diary, from Facebook to Real book

The introduction text from the book

It started one day. Without a clear view of what it would be. It started just as an idea to make one photo every (working) day, to put them on my facebook page and see what reaction I would get on it.

The photographic quality of the photos is not what matters. What is important is the concept of thinking about something for a couple of minutes, and then to make a photo of it using the web cam on my computer.

This project is about the spontaneous moment when you look around, concentrate on a simple thing in your environment and often combine it with text.

Occasionally, I put a hidden meaning into the photo. Perhaps about something that happened to me that day. Not always recognizable to everyone, but meaningful to myself.

I did not know if I would be able to keep this up. But it became a kind of an addiction. When I noticed that people were following my dairy, I was encouraged. It was also exciting to see what responses I would get from my Facebook friends. The nice thing about Facebook is that it is very accessible. Some of the photos appeared to elicit reactions, sometimes a simple 'like'. Other photos produced comments or questions about those photos.

I would like to thank my Facebook friends for their enthusiasm and reactions, some of which were very funny. They are an enriching input into this project.

Soon I got this idea that it would be nice to put the V-Diary in to print. Some 150 photos later, I found that the time was right to do that. In the spirit of Facebook, I wanted not just to use the photos, but I decided to integrate the comments and the 'likes'.

With this project it also fits to use an approachable publisher. That is why I choose to use the print on demand program of the web publisher Blurb. In that way I can keep it in my own hand from begin to the end. That fits also very well with the approachable Facebook system.

So dear friends, take a look in to the bookshop of blurb.com and you can buy your own copy of a real V-Diary book.

What started a web project also needs to stay a web project. I am not yet finished with V-Dairy, which has now extended into it's own Facebook page. Put it into your 'likes' and get a daily dose of V-Dairy.

Most of all: keep up the responses to my photos!
