I had originally intended this book to be a momento for my grandchildren - somthing to remind them that their great grandfather was someone truly special. However, after several years of piecing together all the photos, newspaper articles and personal stories I realised that the story of Reg Rattey VC was quite remarkable. It is not simply the story of the amazing act of bravery that won him his Victoria Cross, but also the way he seemed to be totally unaffected by it all. He remained so humble - In his own words "We were all there together in the mud and the slush, we were there to do a job and we just got on with it".
