About the Book
I originally created these images of priests in their clerical attire and in their recreation for a portraiture class at Monterey Peninsula College. However, the subject of play is particularly relevant to the profession of pastor or church leader. This calling comes with challenges from many directions - pastoral counseling, business needs associated with the running of a parish or organization, balancing personal and family challenges, and those associated with dealing with the hierarchical church. Research has shown that play boosts one’s overall well-being, helps one to cope with stress, and improves one’s physical health. It is therefore very important to have a way to deal with and relieve the stresses that arise from life. The 19th century businessman and US Postmaster General, John Wanamaker, reminds us, “People who cannot find time for recreation are sooner or later obliged to find time for Illness." This book shows how eleven priests and the Bishop from the Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real practice play. There are many ways to play; it is my hope that this book will inspire you to find your own way.
