About the Book
DM for Art is a series of paintings of the men who send strange and peculiar messages to Scout Landry through Instagram’s direct message (DM). The purpose of this conceptual series is to bring attention to the sexual harassment women experience while on social media. Scout uses this art as an outlet to illustrate her voice on societal issues women face on a daily basis and create unique art that communicates a deeper message.
To censor your body or what you post, women must decide while men can hide behind a screen and make comments unfiltered and uncensored with no consequence. Each one of these pieces is a painted portrait from a profile of a man who has Direct Messaged (DM) Scout Landry on Instagram. The title of each painting is derived from their personal message to Scout, however, she throws their words back at them, using their own words to respond to what they said to her. The neon pink sides of the canvas symbolize the presence of aggressive femininity. While the color pink is associated with love, romance, lust, and the female gender, the neon version of pink is in-your-face, bold, and aggressive. This is Scout’s way of incorporating herself within her work because she emulates the bold female exposing the social issues surrounding women and what they have to endure from simply existing. The process of creating the men is done by painting on the ground. Scout paints looking down at them, demonstrating her being in charge and on top rather than letting their words affect her. A small 6” x 8” canvas is all she will give to them but when all the 24 paintings are next to each other it shows how big of an impact one person's words can make on someone.
This provoking series can be described by a quote by Cesar A Cruz “Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.”
