In mid-August 2016 I decided to explore Northwest France from Bordeaux, to Arcachon, and Dune of Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe, walking South from there to see how far I could get.
After spending a few days in Bordeaux, looking at the culture and arts. Which is in another book. I headed to Arcachon, spending a few days there. Arcachon is famous for its oysters.
The area is in pine forests. A mixture of the smell of pine and fresh Atlantic air made it an ideal place for people to recover from tuberculosis.
Until the 1950’s Many celebrities went there to recover.
Because of the links to T. B. People did not want to visit the place; it took a while to become a tourist attraction again.
In the Summer of 2023, a lot of the pine forests were damaged by fires, in one of the hottest summers on record.
A beautiful place well worth a stay.
