About the Book
In this body of work, I decided that rather than duplicate a postcard version of Kyoto’s beauty, to create images that juxtaposed the chaos and symmetry in the urban landscape. My attempts to convey that beauty with my camera led me to create photos of concrete, invasive plants, disrepair, and clutter intermingled with street front gardens, ponds of wilting lotus, abandoned bicycles, and neighborhood shrines. These works presented a foreigner's experience of this "capital city": not a town of pristine temples, but one of sacred beauty in everyday street scenes.
