About the Book
Painted Records is a visual history that illuminates the creative development of artist Jane Bauman. Its origins were in the San Francisco punk/no wave movement of the late 1970’s. After her move to NYC she became an active participant in the East Village Art Scene, and was represented by the seminal Civilian Warfare Gallery in the 1980’s. Working with spray paint and stencils on found objects like discarded vinyl records, social commentary and personal expression were interwoven. Collaboration was central to Bauman’s creative aesthetic and Painted Records presents an overview of both her solo works and her projects with artists Mark C, Jack Johnston and David Wojnarowicz. Bauman’s art is included in the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt Museum of American Art.
