About the Book
The landscape of our minds is littered with the memories of times gone by. When we dream, images emerge that are inspired by past experiences and other hidden forces. Blurred in meaning and rich in symbolism, these surreal recollections can depict the essence of a place or something much deeper. Fading Light embraces that spirit of the vague, symbolic and dreamy. Put simply, these photos can be interpreted as a series of snapshots taken on a road-trip through faded memories of the subconscious.
All of the photographs in Fading Light were created with a vintage Polaroid camera using a new generation of instant film that is both unpredictable and unstable. The experimental chemistry of this film makes for surreal images with unexpected variations in tone, color and texture. Additionally, the film's sensitivity to light and humidity causes its appearance to radically degrade over time. Consequently, this film seemed like the perfect medium for this series because the photos themselves are organic, subjective and fleeting…much like the memories in our mind.
